Tsutomu Yamaguchi

What historical event fascinates you the most?

I don’t know if this counts as a historical “event” but it was during one of the most tragic events of all time.

If you haven’t heard of Mr. Tsutomu Yamaguchi I will tell you a bit about him.

On the day that the US was dropping nuclear bombs on Japan after the Pearl Harbor attack, he was on business for his employer in Hiroshima. The first bomb hit at 8:15 am on August 6th. Tsutomu was back at work just 3 days later, on August 9th in Nagasaki when the second bomb hit. He still had wounds from the first bomb when the second one hit.

In 1957 he was recognized as a survivor of the explosions but he was formally recognized in 2009.

He still lived until the age of 93!

What a wonderful and tragic story wrapped into one. This is only the surface.
